Answers and step-by-step processes for Blue Edge.
Getting started
How do I turn on Relief?
- With a pack on your account, open Layers, then turn on Blue Edge Relief.
- Read the notice and choose I Acknowledge. Relief is NOT FOR NAVIGATION.
- Relief draws over the map.
- Drag Opacity to blend Relief with the base map.
- Choose Done.
How do I drop a waypoint?
- Tap the pin button to drop a waypoint at the map crosshair.
- Open it, choose Edit, and give it a name.
- Choose a type.
- Save it. The named mark is on your map.
How do I mark a catch with Fish On?
- Tap Fish On when a fish comes aboard. The spot is saved right away.
- When you have a moment, open the mark and add a catch photo.
- The photo stays with the catch.
How do I record a trip?
- Tap Record, then Start Trip.
- Your trip records as you go, even with the screen locked.
- Tap Stop, then Save Trip.
- The trip is saved to Trips.
Relief and packs
Which areas are covered?
Eight finished packs cover parts of the Florida coast. More are in progress. See coverage.
Do packs work without a signal?
Yes, once a pack is downloaded to your device.
A pack is taking too much space.
Turn on Storage Saver in Settings → Storage. It keeps less detail at the closest zoom in your packs. To get it back, turn Storage Saver off, then choose Download Full Detail.
Your library
Where are my waypoints stored?
On your devices. Blue Edge doesn’t store your waypoints, trips or photos on a server. See the Privacy Policy.
How do I back up?
Export a .blu backup and keep it somewhere you control. Sync isn’t a substitute. See the 1-2-3 rule.
How do I sync iPhone and Mac?
Open Blue Edge on your iPhone or iPad and tap Sync Now in Companion. Devices pair first, and sync runs over Wi‑Fi or peer-to-peer, not a cable. Allow Local Network access when asked. To move a library by USB, copy a .blu file through Finder.
How do trips relate to waypoints?
Record a trip while you fish, then save it. Catches and marks stay tied to places on the map.
Can a photo create a waypoint?
Yes. Import a catch photo to create a waypoint and fish log, using its location or placing it yourself. On iPhone and iPad you can use the photo as the map icon.
Can I mark reefs or no-fish zones?
Yes. Give waypoints an Area name to see a labeled shape on the map, and draw custom outlines in Companion. An Area isn’t a group, and it isn’t what builds the plotter file.
On the Mac
How do I edit many marks at once?
- On the Map, choose Select, then Box, and drag around the marks.
- Check a field, set the new value, and apply it to all of them.
- The marks now share that Area.
- Undo puts them back.
How do I draw my own area?
- Right-click the map and choose Create Area.
- Click points around the area.
- Choose Save, then name the area.
- Marks inside the shape now use that Area.
Plotter files
How do I send one trip to my plotter?
- Start in the Library on your Mac.
- Choose Filter, then Group, then the group for this trip.
- The Library now shows only that group.
- Choose Import / Export, then Garmin Plotter or Navionics.
Why did the plotter get everything?
You exported CSV, GPX or a backup, or you exported from the iPhone. Those are the full library. For a trip, filter Companion to the group, then Import / Export → Garmin Plotter or Navionics.
Can I send one group from the iPhone?
No. Phone export is the whole book. Sync to Companion, filter by group, then export the plotter file.
Why didn’t my photos or types show up on the plotter?
The plotter file is a thin card. The book stays in the apps. Use Companion at the house.
What’s the difference between Type, Group and Area?
Type (and optional subtype) is what it is: icon and search. Group is one optional trip name, and a pin can’t sit in two groups. Area is a map outline. Only the group filter on Companion changes what goes to the plotter.
Subscription
What does it cost?
Planned introductory pricing at launch is $49.99 a year, which covers iPhone, iPad and Mac with sync and pack updates and includes one Relief pack. You can switch that pack at each renewal. Extra packs are $9.99 a year each and need the subscription. This is introductory pricing, which may increase in the future. There are no lifetime purchases.
What happens if my subscription ends?
Your packs stop working until you resubscribe. Your waypoints, trips and photos stay on your devices.
How do I cancel?
Subscriptions are billed and managed by Apple. Cancel in your Apple account’s Subscriptions settings at least 24 hours before it renews.
Permissions
Background location on iPhone and iPad
Background location is used only while a trip is recording, so the track continues with the screen locked. Stop the trip to end it. You can change Location access in iOS Settings.
